SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The City of Schenectady continues to see opioid overdose numbers rise this summer. Schenectady Police responded to two suspected fatal overdoses Aug. 24-25, bringing the total to 15 suspected overdose deaths since July. The department is actively working with treatment centers and county leadership to hold naloxone trainings and raise awareness about available resources for those struggling with opioid abuse. Lieutenant Ryan Macherone said the recent spike in overdose deaths is causing more people to come out and learn about how they can help. “I think we can look there," Macherone said. ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - Health officials have confirmed the first case of West Nile virus, a disease spread from mosquitoes to humans, this year in St. Louis County. The St. Louis County Department of Public Health sent a memo advising of one patient with West Nile virus, though did not disclose additional details on what might have led up to that case. Southern Californians are in the middle of another heat wave, but there is relief in sight. First, the bad news. Police are searching for three home-invasion robbers who targeted an occupied residence in Encino Monday night.The incident was reported shortly after 9:40 p.m. in the 4900 block of Aqueduct Avenue near Haskell Avenue.Police investigate a home-invasion robbery in Encino on Aug. 28, 2023. An attempted murderer from San Mateo County is accused in the killing of a fellow inmate at the state prison in Susanville.Jose A. Nava, 29, is one of two men who allegedly stabbed Alexander J. Jasso at High Desert State Prison on Saturday night, prison officials said.Nava is serving a 23-year sentence for attempted second-degree murder; he shot a man in the head during a daytime attack on a South San Francisco street in 2015. Prosecutors said that attack was prompted by a gang dispute.The other alleged assailant in the prison killing is Jesse E. Diaz, 32, a convicted murderer from Monterey County.Both suspects have been moved to restricted housing while the attack is investigated.Jasso, 33, was stabbed with an “inmate-manufactured weapon” at 8:18 p.m. Saturday and died shortly before midnight, the prison agency’s report said. OAKLAND — The city of Oakland experienced its 75th and 76th homicides of 2023 within about six hours of each other Monday night, according to authorities.The first of the two shootings occurred just before 5 p.m. at a residence in the 2300 block of International Boulevard in East Oakland. One man was pronounced dead at the residence, and a 20-year-old man was taken to a hospital for a gunshot wound to his lower leg.Authorities did not immediately release the name of the man killed pending confirmation and notification of his next of kin.The motive for this shooting is under investigation and no arrests had been announced as of Tuesday morning.At about 9:50 p.m., a 39-year-old Oakland man was found shot in a vehicle that crashed in the area of 37th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. He was pronounced dead at the scene.Police said investigators were still attempting to determine where the shooting occurred.
