SANTA CLARA – Ji’Ayir Brown’s position as the 49ers’ top-drafted rookie guarantees him nothing, but his first impression on their practice fields signals he could be an immediate contributor this season.Brown, a versatile safety, has been told to learn from the hip pocket of returning starters Talanoa Hufanga and Tashaun Gipson Sr.“When you look at a guy like Ji’Ayir Brown, he has the DNA we are looking for on defense — a guy that’s physical, that’s smart, that can finish,” defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks said.Bullocks wants Brown and any young players to first learn their job before competing for a starting role. Bullocks has coached the 49ers’ defensive backs since 2017, and this offseason brought him a promotion from safeties coach to defensive backs coach, under new coordinator Steve Wilks. Here is how the safety unit looks in Bullocks’ eyes heading into this week’s minicamp:HUFANGA’S ‘DIRTY EYES’Hufanga became a full-time starter last season a...

Opinion: Something is wrong with California’s homelessness spending

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 22:46:30 GMT

California put aside $7.2 billion to address homelessness in the 2021-22 state budget. Last year, there were an estimated 172,000 homeless statewide, which equates to spending nearly $42,000 per homeless person.Spending of this magnitude — which only accounts for state money — is sufficient if it were applied effectively. The worsening crisis indicates that something is off with how the state spends its resources. This perspective is important in light of a comprehensive homeless survey by UC San Francisco. Many of its findings are enlightening, but too many of its suggestions call for more spending. It strains credulity to believe that spending $42,000 per person is insufficient, but if bumped up to $45,000, all will be OK. California does not have the worst-in-the-nation homeless crisis because it spends too little.Continued calls for more government subsidies supporting the state’s ineffective housing-first approach will waste money while failing to alleviate the emerge...

ROME (AP) — Prosecutors in Turin have reportedly opened an investigation after the lead singer of British band Placebo insulted Premier Giorgia Meloni during a July 11 concert, calling her a fascist and racist. The LaPresse and ANSA news agencies said the investigation into alleged “vilification” stemmed from a report by carabinieri police about the comments by Brian Molko during a performance at the Sonic Park Festival in Stupinigi, near Turin. LaPresse reported that as of Monday, Molko hadn’t been placed under investigation.According to a cellphone video circulating on social media, Moko said in Italian: “Giorgia Meloni: piece of (expletive); fascist, racist (expletive).”Emails and calls to Turin prosecutors seeking confirmation weren’t immediately returned. Facebook and Instagram messages left on Placebo’s official accounts went unanswered Wednesday.Members of Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party, which has its roots in Italy’s neo-fascist movement, denounced the...
