The Group of Seven on Sunday called for the “extension, full implementation and expansion” of a grain deal that has been essential to export Ukrainian produce through the Black Sea. G7 agriculture ministers “recognized the importance” of the deal, following a two-day meeting in Miyazaki, Japan. “We strongly support the extension, full implementation and expansion” of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, they said in a communiqué.Under the pact, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, some 28 million metric tons of Ukrainian grain have been exported since last July, including to poor countries facing the brunt of the global food crisis. But Russia is threatening to walk away from the agreement unless its demands are met, portending a return to the full-scale maritime blockade that halted Ukraine’s grain exports in the months after Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February last year. Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 02:08:16 GMT

BRUSSELS — EU member countries should deploy warships to patrol the Taiwan Strait in order to deter Beijing’s military aggression, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.In an article published in Le Journal du Dimanche on Saturday, Borrell took a swipe at French President Emmanuel Macron’s sense of detachment on Taiwan as reflected in an interview with POLITICO earlier this month. Borrell argued in the French publication that “Europe must in fact be very present on this issue [of Taiwan], which concerns us economically, commercially and technologically.”Borrell continued: “That is why I call on European navies to patrol the Taiwan Strait to signify Europe’s commitment to freedom of navigation in this absolutely crucial area. At the same time, we must be vigilant against provocations and overbidding.”“The vast majority of the Taiwanese population believe that the peaceful status quo is the most appropriate solution. L...

As North Atlantic right whale calving season ends, New England Aquarium scientists are sounding the alarm that the number of mother-calf pairs documented this season is far below what’s needed to sustain the critically endangered species. The annual calving season in the southeastern U.S. produced 11 mother-calf pairs and a 12th calf without an observed mother. Nine of those calves were born by the end of December, with the last one detected on Jan. 20.In the last 10 years, scientists have documented 108 calves born, while the previous 10 years yielded 216 calves.“There were half as many right whales born this past decade,” said senior scientist Philip Hamilton, who leads the New England Aquarium’s right whale research program in the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life.“To reach the previous decade’s number, we would need an average of 22 right whales born each year,” Hamilton added. “It is certainly concerning for a population that ha...
