The NCAA has denied North Carolina’s appeal efforts for immediate eligibility for transfer receiver Devontez Walker, a decision that led to criticism Thursday from both Tar Heels coach Mack Brown and athletic director Bubba Cunningham. The school announced the decision less than a week after Walker roamed the sideline but didn’t play during the 17th-ranked Tar Heels’ season-opening victory against South Carolina. Brown went public last month about the school’s efforts to appeal the NCAA’s decision denying a waiver allowing the Kent State transfer to play immediately. In announcing the decision, Brown capped a lengthy and blunt statement this way: “Shame on you, NCAA. SHAME ON YOU!”NCAA rules generally allow players to transfer freely once, but the association regards Walker as a two-time transfer because he enrolled at North Carolina Central before ending up at Kent State. The Eagles didn’t play football because of the COVID-19 pandemic during Walke...Adesanya and Strickland feature in UFC 293, a welcome back to Sydney after 6 years

SYDNEY (AP) — Nigerian-born New Zealander Israel Adesanya will have some Southern Hemisphere support when he takes on American title challenger Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 293 on Sunday. The fight at Sydney Olympic Park’s Qudos Bank Arena — across the Tasman Sea from Adesanya’s base in New Zealand — will give the middleweight champion an opportunity to add a submission, or tap out, to his fight results repertoire.A submission sees an opponent verbally concede the match due to pain or to avoid further injury. Adesanya’s 26 professional mixed martial arts fights include 16 wins by knockout and eight via decision (along with two losses), but none by submission.“What do I want in my career? Submission, I definitely want a submission,” Adesanya told media this week. “It might be this fight. I know he’s going to wrestle. He’d be dumb not to. I know he’s going to try and mix it up. He’s doing this whole thing, ‘Man dance, man dance.’”It’s the first time since ...Climate protester glues feet to floor, interrupting Coco Gauff’s US Open semifinal win over Muchova

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Jawhar Jordan and Jamari Thrash each scored two touchdowns, and Louisville used a slew of explosive plays to dominate Murray State 56-0 on Thursday night for its first shutout in nearly three years. Six days after rallying past Georgia Tech 39-34 in Jeff Brohm’s coaching debut, the Cardinals (2-0) were never challenged by the FCS-level Racers (1-1) in the home opener.Louisville led 28-0 at halftime, with Jack Plummer threading a crossing pass to Thrash for a 73-yard scoring play and Jordan shaking a defender near the left sideline in a 72-yard TD run.Louisville set the tone with chunk plays on its first possession as Kevin Coleman made an incredible one-handed catch for 30 yards on third and 11. Plummer later hit a wide-open Jordan for 32 yards to the 12, and Thrash took a pitch on the next snap and dashed untouched for the TD to cap a six-play, 76-yard drive.Jordan, Louisville’s top rusher last season with 815 yards, carried seven times for 135 yards, includi...Acuña hits 2 of Braves’ 5 homers, Olson hits 47th in 8-5 win over Cardinals
