49ers’ Deebo Samuel gives harsh self-assessment of 2022: `I was awful’

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 01:28:20 GMT

SANTA CLARA — Not satisfied with what the 49ers got from Deebo Samuel last season? You’re not alone.“It was awful,” Samuel said Tuesday. ‘I was awful . . . in every way.”Samuel offered that harsh self-assessment on the first day of the 49ers’ mandatory minicamp, which continues Wednesday and ends Thursday with a family gathering and marks the end of the offseason until training camp begins in July.Samuel, 27, was working off to the side and did not participate in team drills, 11-on-11 or 7-on-7 sessions. Plenty of top tier 49ers were essentially spectators, including defensive end Nick Bosa, left tackle Trent Williams and linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.Attendance at the voluntary sessions as been sporadic for Samuel, although he’s getting in much more work than he did a year ago when he was essentially absent and a “hold-in” while a three-year contract extension worth a maximum of $73.5 million was being negotiated...

GOP hardliners revolt over McCarthy’s debt limit deal

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 01:28:20 GMT

By Manu Raju, Melanie Zanona and Morgan Rimmer | CNNA bloc of Republican hardliners blindsided GOP leaders on Tuesday and derailed two bills, a move they said was retaliation for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s deal with President Joe Biden to suspend the national debt limit. The revolt underscored the fragility of McCarthy’s narrow majority and the lingering tensions with the right-wing of his conference over the debt deal. But the protest also indicated that the members have not yet decided on whether to call for a vote ousting McCarthy from the speakership, something that would rip apart the House GOP and send the chamber into chaos. For now, the conservatives have settled on a strategy to scramble McCarthy’s legislative agenda until they believe he will listen to their list of demands. And they argue that McCarthy blatantly violated a deal he cut in January to assume the speakership on the 15th ballot, though all the details of that agreement were never publicly released and the sp...

Michigan lawmakers renew effort to give sex abuse victims more time to sue

Published Wed, 26 Feb 2025 01:28:20 GMT

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan lawmakers introduced bipartisan legislation Tuesday that would give victims of sexual abuse more time to sue for damages as the state again looks to overhaul laws following multiple sexual abuse scandals. The legislation, which appeared before a committee Tuesday afternoon, would expand the civil statute of limitations for sex abuse victims from age 28 to 52. If enacted, victims would also have a two-year window to sue retroactively, regardless of the time limit. The new measures would allow victims of the late Dr. Robert Anderson at the University of Michigan and others additional time to bring lawsuits that have previously been barred by the statute of limitations. Government entities could not use the immunity defense if they knew or should have known of an accused’s prior sexual misconduct and failed to intervene. In 2018, Michigan increased the statute of limitations to 28 years old following the conviction of Larry Nassar, who sexually abused hund...

(NEXSTAR) — The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission is warning Americans to make sure they're no longer using or buying three types of Boppy-brand baby loungers that were recalled in 2021 — after the commission says two more infants died in incidents related to the products. At the time of recall, the Colorado-based Boppy company had sold about 3.3 million loungers at retailers like Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Pottery Barn Kids. According to the recall, the items were sold in various colors from January 2004 through September 2021 and ranged in price from $30 to $44.A total of 10 infant deaths have now been linked to the loungers, which were recalled in September 2021 over suffocation risks. According to the original Boppy lounger recall, suffocation risks could occur when infants roll, move or are placed in positions that obstruct breathing. Additionally, babies who roll off the lounger can face suffocation risk if they roll onto heavier materials, like adult pillows, which C...
