TOULOUSE, France (AP) — Georgia denied Portugal a first-ever win at the Rugby World Cup by scoring a 78th-minute try to snatch an 18-18 draw on Saturday.Replacement hooker Tengizi Zamtaradze’s try from the back of a rolling maul wasn’t converted by Luka Matkava, and Portugal had one more chance for a landmark victory when Georgia gave away a penalty for obstruction off the restart. With the clock in the red, fullback Nuno Guedes pulled his kick wide.Still, Portugal gained its first points at a Rugby World Cup in its sixth match in the tournament, having lost all four pool games in 2007 and opened this World Cup with a 28-8 defeat to a second-string Wales.Os Lobos recovered from being 13-0 down after 32 minutes on the back of two blistering tries by winger Raffaele Storti. They didn’t concede another point until Zamtaradze’s try.Georgia’s record of winning at least one match at every Rugby World Cup since 2007 is under threat now, with games against Fiji and Wales to come. This was Port...

The Rugby World Cup knockout stage has started early for Australia. On the back foot after a loss to Fiji, the Australians cannot afford to lose their third pool game — against Wales in Lyon — otherwise they’ll likely be heading for their earliest-ever exit from the tournament.Self-introspection has gripped a proud rugby nation, which has been at a low ebb for years and is wondering whether it really was the best idea to turn in January to charismatic coach Eddie Jones to lead the Wallabies into the World Cup.Jones has been his typical entertaining self ahead of the game — indeed for most of his nine-month second spell in charge of Australia — as he spoke in defiant terms about his confidence in his players and how he thrives in this kind of backs-to-the-wall situation.“I love it when you’ve got to try to create a team, where everyone thinks they’re going to lose, to put themselves in a position to win,” Jones said. “I don’t know if it’s a drug but that’s the rush from coaching...

Remember Terrell Suggs?Sneering, snarling, quarterback-sacking Terrell Suggs? The ex-Ravens linebacker who used to incite Tom Brady in a way few could, reach into Brady’s competitive soul and poke the greatest quarterback of all time? Suggs hunted quarterbacks with the best of them in the mid-2010s, including Brady. He would stand and flex over his victims, a football villain with a message: I came, I saw, I sacked. No one was safe, in his mind or his teammates. Not even Brady and the Patriots at the peak of their powers. In 23-plus seasons, Suggs’ Ravens remain one of only three teams with multiple playoff wins over the Bill Belichick-era Patriots, joining the Giants and Broncos. Once upon a time, in a dynasty that feels far, far away, the Ravens, Giants and Broncos were seen as rivals. PARIS (AP) — Families, community groups and far-left activists marched in cities around France on Saturday to decry racism and police brutality, putting authorities on edge at a time when French police are deployed en masse for a string of high-security events.Lingering anger over the killing by police of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk in June was an impetus for Saturday’s protests, but they included groups with disparate demands for immigrants’ rights, affordable housing and economic justice. More than 100 marches were planned around France, and Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin ordered special police vigilance.Tensions briefly flared at the largely peaceful, boisterous protest in Paris. Members of the crowd smashed windows of a bank along the march route, and police evacuated the rattled employees. At another spot, protesters surrounded a police car and an officer darted out, waving his gun. Some 30,000 police and gendarmes were working Saturday to keep order for a visit by Pope F...
