Why the US evacuation from Sudan left Americans behind

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:15:27 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Warring factions trying to seize control of the east African nation of Sudan have plunged the country into chaos, and thousands are fleeing the capital of Khartoum and nearby battle zones. Some countries, including the U.S., have shuttered their embassies and many are coordinating daring evacuations of their staffs and other residents in an array of convoys, flights and frantic getaway drives. But over the past week there have been dramatically different responses by various governments as they try to get their citizens and embassy personnel to safety. The U.S. has come under scrutiny for evacuating roughly 70 embassy staff in a helicopter mission by elite SEAL commandos over the weekend, while warning thousands of private American citizens in Sudan there would be no similar evacuation for them. The State Department, which has advised U.S. citizens for years not to travel to Sudan, continues to advise Americans to shelter in place. Harris faces new test of political skills in 2024 campaign

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:15:27 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — She swaggered, she jabbed, she inspired. She even joked. Anyone looking for a glimpse of what Vice President Kamala Harris could bring to the campaign trail would have found it this week at Howard University, where she headlined a rally for reproductive rights. After two years of tightly scripted, uneven performances that often dismayed Democrats and cheered Republicans, Harris is looser, more forceful and more willing to speak off the cuff following her trip to Africa a month ago.“That is the vice president that America is going to get a chance to get to know for the first time,” said Laphonza Butler, a former adviser to Harris who leads EMILY’s List. Now Harris, the first woman and person of color in her position, will be put to the test as President Joe Biden seeks a second term. Although vice presidents are rarely decisive in reelection efforts, Harris is poised to be an exception. Not only is she leading the charge on Democrats’ most potent issue, the bat...

US economic growth likely slowed in January-March quarter

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:15:27 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite surging interest rates, punishing inflation and global turbulence, the U.S. economy stood firm last year. From employers to consumers, the picture was one of surprising resilience. This year may be shaping up as a more downbeat story. The economy is widely expected to decelerate steadily and to slip into a recession sometime this year. Some early such signs could begin to emerge Thursday, when the Commerce Department will issue its first estimate of the economy’s performance in the first three months of 2023.Forecasters have predicted that the gross domestic product — the broadest measure of economic output — grew at a 1.9% annual rate from January through March, according to a survey by the data firm FactSet. That would mark a significant slowdown from the 3.2% growth rate from July through September and the 2.6% rate from October through December. The obstacles the economy faces are growing more troublesome. The biggest among them is the dramatically higher ...

Releasing leak suspect a national security risk, feds say

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:15:27 GMT

Federal prosecutors will urge a judge Thursday to keep behind bars a Massachusetts Air National guardsman accused of leaking highly classified military documents, arguing he may still have access to secret national defense information he could expose. In court papers filed late Wednesday, the Justice Department lawyers said releasing 21-year-old Jack Teixeira from jail while he awaits trial would be a grave threat to the U.S. national security. Investigators are still trying to determine whether he kept any physical or digital copies of classified information, including files that haven’t already surfaced publicly, they wrote. “There simply is no condition or combination of conditions that can ensure the Defendant will not further disclose additional information still in his knowledge or possession,” prosecutors wrote. “The damage the Defendant has already caused to the U.S. national security is immense. The damage the Defendant is still capable of causing is extraordinary.” A...

Rapids survive Open Cup scare as Jonathan Lewis scores twice in South Platte River Derby win over Hailstorm

The Colorado Rapids weren’t “cupset” Wednesday night in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Given the Burgundy Boys’ history in the tournament, a win in and of itself is something to celebrate, but beating an in-state opponent made it even sweeter.Colorado scored a pair of second-half goals to earn a first Open Cup win since 2017 with a 3-1 victory over the Northern Colorado Hailstorm in the first iteration of the “South Platte River Derby” in Commerce City.Jonathan Lewis scored twice and Max scored his second goal in the last three games, though their neighbors from the north made quite a bit of noise in the upset bid.Hey @mitch__carroll, I'm sure you're well aware but your guy has scored two goals in his last three games. Avalanche-Kraken Game 5 quick hits: Nathan MacKinnon’s rage justified after handful of missed calls

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:15:27 GMT

Instant reaction from the Avalanche’s 3-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken in Game 5 of their first-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series.1. Four blind mice? We’re not going to say the zebras have been making stuff up this as they go, but … oh, to heck with it. We will. Darn straight, we will. Nathan MacKinnon gets tripped by Will Borgen at center ice late in the first period and no call? After Jack Johnson got two minutes in the sin bin for contact that looked far more incidental? MacKinnon finally let his rage flag fly with about 9:50 left in the second stanza, when he appeared to be on the receiving end of another Borgen trip — this one near the boards as the two got their skates tangled. No. 29 was so steamed that he slammed his stick in frustration, and 10 seconds later, Seattle’s Tye Kartye fired a snapper into an open net — Georgiev was screened by Josh Manson — to put the visitors ahead again, this time by a 2-1 score.2. 15% slower at everythingWith 16:43 left in the second, defe...

The daytime Emmy award winning show, “Red Table Talk,” hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, daughter Willow Smith, and mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris has been canceled, according to Variety. Meta is shutting down its Facebook Watch original programs, and "Red Table Talk" was the last remaining show to be canceled.  Produced by Jada and Will Smith's production company, Westbrook Studios, "Red Table Talk" is a show that tackled current social and cultural issues from an intergenerational lens. News of the cancellation comes after the departure of Mina Lefevre, Head of Development and Programming at Meta, along with more than 20,000 employees, as part of the latest round of layoffs. In 2020, Facebook began scaling back its original scripted programming after removing “Sorry For Your Loss,” starring Elizabeth Olsen and “Limetown”, starring Jessica Biel. The popular social platform then pivoted to more unscripted programming with recent shows like the Tom Brady docuseries “Tom vs. Ti...
