BEND, Ore. (AP) — A 21-year-old college student has died after falling hundreds of feet down a steep, rocky ravine near the summit of North Sister in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains.Joel Tranby loved the outdoors and was a big part of the community in the city of Bend, according to people who knew him, and his parents say they’re “devastated by the loss,” KTVZ-TV reported Wednesday. He helped coach his former high school’s Nordic Ski Team and was planning to graduate college in December.Rescue teams called off the search and were working to locate and recover the body, Lane County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Tom Speldrich said in a statement Wednesday. North Sister rises 10,085 feet (3,074 meters) and is known as a difficult climb because of the loose volcanic rock that makes up the mountainside and the lack of places to anchor ropes for protection, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported. While climbing with his girlfriend on Monday, Tranby fell about 300 to 500 feet (90-150 meters) and was se...Police seized laptops and a memoir from the home of a witness to Tupac Shakur’s 1996 killing

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A home that Las Vegas police raided this week in connection with the 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur is tied to one of the only surviving witnesses to the crime, a man long known to investigators whose nephew was seen as a suspect shortly after the rapper’s killing.Detectives sought items “concerning the murder of Tupac Shakur” from Duane “Keffe D” Davis, according to warrant documents obtained Thursday by The Associated Press. Davis, now 60, is a self-described “gangster” and the uncle of Orlando Anderson, one of Shakur’s known rivals. Anderson denied involvement in Shakur’s killing at the time, and died two years later in a shooting in Compton, California.Police reported collecting multiple computers, a cellphone and hard drive, “documentary documents,” a Vibe magazine that featured Shakur, “purported marijuana,” several .40-caliber bullets, two “tubs containing photographs” and a copy of Davis’ 2019 tell-all memoir, ”Compton Street Legend.”The ...Homes become ‘air fryers’ in Phoenix heat, people ration AC due to cost

Temperatures have peaked at or above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius) the entire month of July in Phoenix. Air conditioning, which made modern Phoenix even possible, is a lifeline. When a cloudless sky combines with outdoor temperatures over 100 F, your house turns into an “air fryer” or “broiler,” as the roof absorbs powerful heat and radiates it downward, said Jonathan Bean, co-director of the Institute for Energy Solutions at the University of Arizona. Bean knows this not only from his research, he also experienced it firsthand this weekend when his air conditioner broke.“This level of heat that we are having in Phoenix right now is enormously dangerous, particularly for people who either don’t have air conditioning or cannot afford to operate their air conditioner,” said Evan Mallen, a senior analyst for Georgia Institute of Technology’s Urban Climate Lab.Yet some are cutting back on AC, trying to bear the heat, afraid of the high electricity bills that will soon ar...Sailor rescued after fall on USS Constitution

A sailor was rescued after he fell roughly 20 feet aboard the USS Constitution on Thursday, officials said. The incident happened Thursday afternoon, with SKY7-HD capturing video of crews carrying the injured sailor off the Constitution on a stretcher. Officials with the Boston Fire Department said the 19-year-old sailor broke his ankle and suffered a head injury as a result of the fall. Technical rescue crews were called in to help rescue the sailor due to the low ceilings and confined spaces on the Constitution. A spokesperson from USS Constitution Public Affairs Office said the sailor’s head injury was “minor” and said the sailor was taken to Mass. General Hospital in Boston. There was no immediate update on the sailor’s condition but officials said he was alert and talking with first responders after the fall. Crews were seen wrapping up their presence on scene near the Constitution around 7 p.m.This is a developing story; stay with 7NEWS on-a...AMC Theaters scraps plans to charge more for good seats

New York (CNN) — AMC Theaters said Thursday it is ending its “Sightline” tiered seat-pricing pilot, which it began earlier this year, in which moviegoers who sat up by the front of the theater directly next to the screen paid less for a ticket compared to those who chose more desirable seats in the middle of the theater. In February, AMC (AMC) said it was rolling out the initiative to all of its roughly 1,000 movie theaters by the end of the year. The company said at the time that AMC theaters would offer three pricing tiers for tickets, with the highest-end “Preferred” tier in the middle of the theaters priced at a “slight premium” compared to its “Standard” tier. That standard tier, it said, would be sold for the “traditional cost of a ticket.” The third “Value” tier would be the lowest-priced tickets for seats in the front row.AMC said it is now pivoting away from Sightline and will not roll it out nationwide. Instead, it will test a new type of front row seating...Boston Mayor Michelle Wu backs Henry Santana in at-large City Council race

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has formally endorsed Henry Santana for councilor-at-large, and plans to keep lending her name to other candidates throughout this election season.“I’m watching all the races very closely,” Wu told the Herald on Thursday. “It’s a really important election.”Wu said Santana, her former director of civic organizing, is best equipped to address some of the “institutional knowledge” that will be lost when longtime Councilor-at-Large Michael Flaherty steps down after this year’s election.“I think Henry will be a great choice to really hit the ground running because he knows City Hall inside and out, having formerly worked as a Council aide and also within the administration, coordinating across all departments,” Wu said. “I also feel aligned with him on his values and what must be.”Santana is one of eight candidates seeking four at-large seats on the City Council. The three incumbents and five challengers will all be on the ballot this November, as Flaherty’s deci...South Boston beach set to reopen Tuesday, at last

It won’t be long until people can finally put their toes in the water at Southie’s L Street Beach. The beloved beach will reopen Tuesday, three years after it closed to make way for the $31.2 million renovation of the Curley Center. Piping plovers, a threatened beach-nesting bird species, caused further delays, but officials say the chicks have fledged, meaning they can sustain flight.Southie residents and Curley Center members will get the chance to cool down next week after the Conservation Commission on Wednesday approved an operations and maintenance plan, which outlines conditions the city needs to take for access not to have an adverse effect on the piping plover.Boston Centers for Youth and Families opened the Curley last month, and some city officials and dignitaries became skeptical that the piping plover was the reason behind the prolonged beach closure.MassWildlife determined earlier this month that beach access would not harm the threatened piping plover as long the city ...Latest news
