Colorado’s farm students might get less college aid due to FAFSA changes

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:27:53 GMT

Colorado students whose families own farms or small businesses might not be able to qualify for federal aid for college under revisions that are meant to simplify the complicated form. The updates to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA, are the result of a yearslong effort to make the form easier for families to fill out. Over the long term, financial aid experts believe the streamlined form will benefit families. But some of the changes expected to be rolled out this year might have unintended consequences, especially in the way families tally farm and small business assets.Without a fix, experts worry that fewer rural students will go to college. Already, they are less likely than urban and suburban counterparts to go. A bipartisan group of congressmen, including Sen. Michael Bennet, a Colorado Democrat, is hoping to amend the new rules. A few ideas for Vice President Kamala Harris’ Sunnyvale visit

We’ve all had our share of whirlwind trips, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Sunnyvale on Monday will probably be a hurried affair as well. But on the off chance there’s a little free time in her itinerary, here are a few spots the vice president should consider visiting before jetting back to D.C.First, if you want to understand how far Sunnyvale has come after visiting Applied Materials’ advanced labs, take a trip to the Sunnyvale Heritage Orchard and Museum on Remington Avenue. The apricots aren’t quite ready for picking, but the orchard of 800 Blenheim apricot trees spread out over 10 acres is a visual reminder of the days when the Santa Clara Valley was the fruit-production capital of the world. You might even run into Charlie Olson, who continued to work the orchard well into his 80s.The Orchard Heritage Park in Sunnyvale contains about 800 apricot trees, with fruit is picked and sold at a farm stand at the adjacent Sunnyvale Community Center.
